Headaches

(Arising From Neck / Back)

Headaches can be a common problem that many of us may experience every now and then.

However, we often forget to stop and question: “Is getting a headache normal?” “Does everyone get headaches?” “Why am I getting a headache?”

Chiropractic can be an effective method of treatment of headaches.

Different types of headaches include (but are not limited to):

  • Cervico-genic Headache

Often the result of problems arising from the neck. Common causes can be postural related issues from sitting for long periods of time at a desk, long distance driving and other postural changes. These types of headache usually affect the base of the skull or one or both sides of the head and are usually dull and achy.

  • Migraine Headache

A severe, often sharp headache usually accompanied by other symptoms such as increased sensitivity to light or sound, nausea or visual disturbances. Problems affecting the vertebrae (bones of the spine) in the neck can cause headaches and can be a contributory factor in migraines. Often caused by trigger factors such as stress, hormonal changes and blood sugar changes.

  • Tension Headache

Can feel like a tight band around the head, quite often associated with muscular origin and trigger points. The pain felt is usually even and is not accompanied by nausea, increased sensitivity to light or sound or visual disturbances. They are often caused by postural changes, stress, previous neck injuries and lack of rest or sleep.

We can locate the stiffness in the joints of the neck which are causing the problem and by treating them, improve their movement and function. This will relieve the muscle spasm and nerve irritation that may be causing the problem.

Dr Baillie will ask you questions as part of your medical history, which will include questions about the pain, posture, previous injuries and lifestyle. She will carry out a thorough examination and offer you a diagnosis of your complaint.

Treatment will be individually tailored to you and we have a firm belief that patients respond successfully to a ‘hands on’ approach combined with advice and exercises, which reduce the risk of recurrence.
